WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS BLOUSE
These blouses are all handmade, so are bound to have flaws. What makes the textiles of Mexico so special is that these designs have been implemented in traditional clothing for well over 1000 years. We have included a photo of an ancient lintel of Lady Kabàl Xoc found in ancient Chiapas to demonstrate just how long some of these patterns have been around for. The hand embroidered blouses, like this one, are a simpler style made for everyday wear, unlike the intricate huipils and ceremonial clothes that are made for special occasions, but even these simpler blouses mimic ancient styles and patterns including sun designs, the moon, maize patterns, flowers and more.
THIS BLOUSE IS HAND-EMBROIDERED
There are countless items of clothing online and in stores that are sold as "hand embroidered" that are actually done by machine. Some of the machines are manually operated, with the artisan steering the item to create artistic designs, while other designs are undoubtedly embroidered by computers.
When you look at these photos, you will see the back of the piece through the neckline. You can see that the threads are tied-off by hand, and there is no white backing. White backing is commonly used for machine embroidery in Mexico, as it keeps the material stable while it is going through the machines. (We have posted an example in the photos for you to see.)
We guarantee this piece was hand-done by artisans in Chiapas. The women work together and sell their pieces in communal shops and markets, so we rarely know a specific artist by name. This is part of communal life among the Maya.
We collected this blouse on our travels through Chiapas in December 2023.
ABOUT THE SIZING
These blouses are rectangular, so if the chest measurement is 40 Inches, we recommend this for someone with a 38 inch chest or smaller. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing a woven belt, as we do have a few in stock and can also match the colour for you.
SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE
We have had great success shipping Mexican Post to Canada and the US, which comes with tracking. Shipping does take about 3-6 weeks.
PAY EXTRA FOR EXPRESS SHIPPING
If you would like fast shipping through FEDEX, we charge $800 Pesos for shipping. Fedex will deliver within about 6 business days, and the postage is tracked. If you are purchasing from outside of the US or Canada, please contact us directly at thecuratorinmexico@gmail.com for a shipping quote. If you are purchasing more than one item, and would like them shipped with Fedex, we will calculate the shipping cost based on size and weight of the parcel.
