WHAT MAKES THIS PURSE SPECIAL
 
This Chamulan purse was woven on a backstrap loom, and is reminiscent of the iconic black or white shaggy wool garments worn only in the intriguing community of San Juan Chamula.   Sheep in this town are sacred, and are never killed.  The value of the clothing is based on how thick and shaggy the wool is, with longer strands attracting higher values than those with shorter to no shag.  Given the fact that the clothes are incredibly expensive and unlikely to be worn by many outside of this community, we are thrilled to have these wonderful pieces as examples of this emblematic feature of San Juan Chamula.
